In memory of a truly great man and inspiring musician
In fond memory of a wonderful musician and a real gentleman.
A musical Giant!
We both have so many good memories of Neil. His solos in the St.Matthew Passion were always wonderful!
A wonderful professional oboist who after he retired played with my 'cellist husband and other amateur musicians. He was our lovely neighbour who sat with my husband when he was also dying from pancreatic cancer watching cricket on TV. He played the Mozart quartet with friends at the funeral. I have very fond memories of Neil.
Neil was such a dear man. Apart from his obvious and prodigious talent for music, (and teaching) he also had the gift of making everyone around him feel special when in fact, clearly, he was the special one. He is missed and fondly remembered by everyone who knew him including me. Best wishes to Jan and the family. x
Neil was one of nature's gentlemen.l shall always treasure the experience of playing with Neil, he would turn a phrase or play one note and it would be magical. He was always so encouraging and generous and shared so much.lt was a privilege to know him and Jan.
I have so many very warm memories of dear Neil, both on and off the concert platform. A superb artist, gentleman, friend to so many, fun loving, witty, courteous to all, and much missed.
Neil, your musicianship and beautiful playing were always an inspiration to me.
A wonderful oboist. A lovely man and a loyal supportive colleague. He will be sadly missed.

our long term friendship will for ever be remembered, the hours spent together most treasured.
With many fond memories
My deepest sympathy to his family. I was a student of Janice Knight.
My sister died of the same illness last year and I therefore can't think of a better charity I should like to give to.
All of us at the Kirckman Concert Society are deeply indebted to Neil for all the care he gave to his management of our musical programme, and we will greatly miss his wise counsel and gentle humour.
You will be in my heart for ever. Your Jan xxx
In remembrance of Neil, my friend.
Dad, you will be with us always. Thank you for everything you did for us. Love you, Murray x
Neil was such an inspiration as an oboist and musician. And such a gentleman. I'll remember him always.
You will always be in our hearts Neil - such a wonderful, kind and caring person. Yvette, Phil and Rhiannon
In memory of a wonderful man.
I'm sure that like many oboists, I have very precious memories of a couple of lessons and master classes with Neil when I was in my early twenties. His encouragement, warmth and generosity made a real difference to me at a time when I needed that 'push' to be brave enough to be the musician that I wanted to be, rather than the one who I thought teachers wanted to hear, and for this I am forever grateful.
Neil was always supportive, both to my oboe trio at the time and to me personally. Always a gentleman as others have said, and always with a sparkle in his eyes. A true musician and a great oboist. Best wishes to Jan and all his family x
A thoroughly nice man and a true gentleman. We will miss his sense of fun and his fine oboe-playing. A great loss.
With very fond memories of Neil - a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
Ever since the 1990's I have been an ardent fan of Neil Black. We shared many experiences from discussing the pedagogy of Marcel Moyse to musical collaborations at the Marlboro and Sarasota Music Festivals. His musicality was exquisite and his love of music penetrated everything he did with the oboe. I am so grateful to have known him and to have shared the miracle of music-making with him. He will be so royally missed. With love and support to his entire family, CAROL WINCENC, Flutist, NYC, NY.
Although we knew Neil for only a year or so, his charm, kindness and determination was appreciated by us all. He will be sadly missed. We send our condolences to Jan and his family.
A wonderfully generous man who loved the oboe and fellow oboists until the end. His kind words and support helped me when I needed them. He will be sorely missed by many, such an inspiration.
Neil was, it should not go without saying, consummate oboist and musician- but also a kind, generous, and patient colleague. I'm lucky to have played with him.
Neil was one of the very best, a real gentleman, a great oboist and a consummate musician. He was an inspiration to so many of us. I'll always remember his kindness, his generosity and his humour. He'll be badly missed.
I have such wonderful and warm memories of Neil, from our time teaching together at the Sarasota Music Festival, to serving on the jury of the Barbirolli Competition together, to presenting him with IDRS Honorary Membership (with Jan and I somehow managing to keep it a surprise!). His legacy as the finest of oboists and musicians is everlasting. What a great man!
In memory of Neil. Thank you for all the fun and and laughter. I will miss your fantastic sense of humour. My condolences to the family.
